Yakima, Wash., January, 2012 – This week FirstFruits Marketing of Washington launched its Opal® brand apple campaign aimed at increasing awareness of this exceptionally flavored new apple variety, while helping raise funds for Katies Krops, a non – profit with a mission to empower kids to help feed the hungry in local areas where the apple is sold.
Katie’s Krops offers grants to kids ages 9 to 16 to start vegetable gardens with the bounty then donated to individuals in need. Katie's Krops gardens provide a sustainable solution to hunger while teaching kids an understanding of agriculture and the environment, nutrition, responsibility, and compassion.

The apple is sweet with a slight hint of tang at the finish, a crunchy texture, and a beautiful golden skin. Consumers have responded enthusiastically to this apple which is grown exclusively by Broetje Orchards in Washington and has limited availability.
