Snake River Housing, Inc.

Vista Hermosa was established in 1990 in response to the need for quality, affordable housing near the workplace. To address this situation, the Broetjes invested $5 million from their business to build 121 single-family homes and apartment units to rent at low cost to year-round employees. Residents named the community Vista Hermosa, which means "Beautiful View."

Today, the community is home to over 600 residents. Year-round staff administer the following programs for youth and adults.

  • Computer literacy
  • ESL and GED classes
  • Social services and family outreach
  • Summer Youth program
  • Recreation and sports teams

Local Leadership

The community is managed by a board of directors that is comprised of the residents themselves. Directors meet to review rental increases, rules and regulations, and service activities being offered in the community. Any concerns or issues that arise with families in the community are addressed by this body of individuals ensuring that all residents feel a certain sense of ownership, safety and accountability to one another.

Retreat House

The retreat house is a Spanish style structure that rests on a hill overlooking the community.  It is a place for visitors to come, hold meetings and stay for one or more nights.  It offers six bedrooms with single beds and can accommodate up to 18 people comfortably.  Accommodations include:

  • 4 full baths -- towels and linens included
  • Large living room/meeting room with fireplace
  • Full service kitchen and dining area -- utensils provided
  • Two outdoor patios with space for meetings, dining and BBQ

Anyone who is 16 years or older is welcome.  Please bring a strong interest in learning about community development and how Christ is working in our rural, farm working community.  The cost to use the facilities is $25 per person per night, or $15 per person for day use; this includes bedding, towels and dishes.

Orchard View Market

Orchard View Market is also located on site and provides residents easy access to basic commodities, fuel, and laundromat services.  The store has a twofold purpose:  efficiency and community service.  It seeks to be a break-even entity while providing jobs to youth from the community.
